HEROIC analysts identified a database breach tied to MinecraftPocketEditionForum, a Minecraft community forum based in the United States, exposing 13,748 records. The breach is dated to May 24, 2015. The exposed data includes email addresses, usernames, and passwords, hashed using the MyBB forum software's built-in scheme. The forum was reportedly compromised by an attacker operating under the handle @rmsg0d and was later shut down entirely.

Why the MinecraftPocketEditionForum Password Hashes Still Pose Risk

MyBB's default hashing offers more protection than the weakest legacy forum schemes, but that does not make it immune to cracking. Attackers with modern hardware and readily available password lists can still recover a meaningful share of weak or commonly used passwords. Once a password is cracked, it can be tried directly against other accounts belonging to the same person.

  • Passwords, hashed using MyBB's built-in scheme

Why This Matters Even Though the Forum Is Gone

The forum itself has since been shut down, but the leaked data has not disappeared. A cracked password can still be used for credential stuffing against email, gaming, or shopping accounts where the same password might be reused, and the paired username and email make phishing attempts more convincing. This is how an old, defunct forum's breach can still lead to account takeover, identity theft, or financial fraud years later.

How Database Breaches Like This Happen

A database breach like this typically happens when an attacker exploits a vulnerability in the forum software or the server hosting it, then extracts the entire user table in one pass. Community forums, especially smaller or unmaintained ones, are common targets because they often run outdated software with known weaknesses. Once the data is out, it can circulate indefinitely, long after the original site is gone.

Check If Your Account Was Affected

Old forum breaches like this one continue to circulate on dark web forums years after they first occurred, so it is worth confirming whether your information was part of this exposure. HEROIC's free breach scanner checks your email address against a database of more than 400 billion breached records, including this one, so you can find out quickly and take action if needed.
