HEROIC analysts first flagged the MiningForum breach when it appeared in a surge of dark web activity in August 2018. The Germany-based mining industry conference platform had 271,131 user records exposed, including email addresses and plaintext passwords. MiningForum serves global mining professionals and conference attendees, meaning its user base includes corporate email addresses from companies operating in the mining and resources sector around the world. The breach has recieved renewed attention as these credentials continue to surface in credential stuffing campaigns.


Why 271,000 Plaintext Passwords from MiningForum Are Still Weaponized Today

Plaintext passwords require no cracking. Every one of the 271,131 exposed MiningForum credentials was immediately usable the moment the database was exfiltrated. How MiningForum's Data Feeds Corporate Account Takeover

With over 271,000 plaintext credentials from a professional industry platform, attackers have a ready-made list of corporate and professional email addresses with tested passwords. Credential stuffing against company email systems, LinkedIn accounts, and industry portals can give attackers a foothold into organizations. From there, financial fraud is often just one more credential reuse away. Identity theft of mining professionals can also be used to craft convincing spear phishing attacks against colleagues and employers, and beleive it or not, these campaigns have been observed targeting commodity traders directly.


How a Database Breach Works

A database breach occurs when an attacker gains unauthorized access to a web application's backend database, often through SQL injection vulnerabilities, insecure server configurations, or compromised administrative credentials. The attacker queries and exports user tables containing registration data. In the MiningForum case, passwords were stored without any hashing or encryption, meaning the exported data contained fully usable credentials with no additional effort required from the attacker. The data was then distributed across dark web forums and aggregated into credential stuffing toolkits.
