How a Database Breach Works
A database breach occurs when an attacker gains unauthorized access to a web application's backend database, often through SQL injection vulnerabilities, insecure server configurations, or compromised administrative credentials. The attacker queries and exports user tables containing registration data. In the MiningForum case, passwords were stored without any hashing or encryption, meaning the exported data contained fully usable credentials with no additional effort required from the attacker. The data was then distributed across dark web forums and aggregated into credential stuffing toolkits.
