Security researchers at HEROIC came across a stealer log labeled "MIRAGE CLOUD" while monitoring Telegram channels known for trading stolen data. Dated 1 February 2024, the file contains 5,542 records, each combining a website URL, an email address, and a plaintext password lifted straight from an infected computer.

Why This Is Dangerous: No Encryption Standing in the Way

Analysts note that stealer logs remove the biggest obstacle attackers usually face: encryption. In this file, passwords are stored exactly as the victim typed them, with no hashing or scrambling involved.

That means anyone who obtains the MIRAGE CLOUD file can attempt to log into a victim's accounts immediately, without needing any special hacking skills or cracking tools.

What Was Exposed

  • Email addresses
  • Plaintext passwords
  • Website URLs tied to each set of credentials

Why This Matters: A Gateway to Bigger Problems

Researchers point out that reused passwords are the real threat multiplier here. If someone's leaked password matches what they use on other sites, criminals can run credential stuffing attacks across email providers, banks, and shopping platforms.

This chain reaction is how a single leaked record turns into account takeover, financial fraud, or identity theft affecting far more than the original site.

How Stealer Logs Work

According to HEROIC's threat team, stealer malware usually spreads through cracked software, fake installers, or malicious ads promising free downloads. Once it runs, the malware quietly pulls saved passwords, browser autofill data, and session cookies from the victim's machine and compiles them into a log, exactly like the MIRAGE CLOUD file, before it gets uploaded and shared among Telegram users.

Check If You Are Affected
