In August 2023, HEROIC analysts detected a stealer log file shared on Telegram by an anonymous actor operating under the name MIRAGE CLOUD. The upload contained 6,952 records, each including an email address, a plaintext password, and one or more URLs pointing to the specific services or systems that were compromised. The data was verified and indexed into HEROIC's DarkHive breach monitoring system, which tracks credential leaks across dark web forums, file-sharing channels, and private Telegram groups.

Why This Is Dangerous

Plaintext passwords are the most dangerous type of leaked credential because they require zero effort to use. There is no encryption to break and no hash to crack. Anyone who accessed this Telegram file had working login combinations ready to go. Combined with the service URLs included in the log, attackers knew exactly which platforms to target first. This is not a theoreticall threat. It is an immediate, operational risk for every person whose data appeared in the MIRAGE CLOUD dump.

What Was Exposed in the MIRAGE CLOUD Leak

  • Email addresses used to identify and access accounts
  • Plaintext passwords captured without any encryption
  • URLs pointing to the specific services that were breached
  • API host data revealing internal system connections

Why This Matters

A stealer log with 6,952 records is not just a privacy violation. It is a toolkit for credential stuffing, account takeover, and identity theft. Attackers take these email and password combinations and run them against banks, email providers, social platforms, and corporate login pages. Password reuse makes this highly effective. One compromised account can cascade into several others. Financial fraud becomes possible once attackers get into email accounts, which are used to reset passwords on banking and shopping sites. For victims who used work emails, the risk extends to their employers and colleagues as well.

How Stealer Logs Work

Stealer logs are created by infostealer malware, a category of malicious software designed to harvest credentials silently. The infection typically arrives through a phishing link, a trojanized software installer, or a malicious browser plugin. Once running on the victim's machine, the infostealer collects saved browser passwords, active session cookies, keystrokes, and API tokens. This data is bundled into a log file and transmited back to the attacker. The operator then posts it to Telegram channels or dark web markets, either for direct use or for sale to other criminals. Victims rarely know their devices have been infected until account compromises start appearing.
