The Moon_Log Stealer Data Quietly Appeared on Telegram in July 2023
HEROIC analysts uncovered a stealer log dataset shared on Telegram in July 2023 under the name Moon_Log. A threat actor distributed 978 free log packages that collectively exposed 10,171 records harvested from infected devices. Each record contained an email address, a plaintext password, and the URL of the website where those credentials were used, giving attackers everything they need to take over accounts immediately.
Why This Is Dangerous
Stealer log data is particularly harmful because it bypasses every step that usually slows down attackers. The passwords are already in plaintext, the email addresses are already matched to them, and the URLs tell attackers exactly where to use each pair. There is no need to crack hashes or guess which site a password belongs to. Cybercriminals can feed this data directly into automated tools that attempt logins across banking, email, and corporate platforms within minutes of obtaining the logs.
What Was Exposed
- Email Addresses
- Plaintext Passwords
- URLs (the specific websites associated with each credential)
Why This Matters
Credential stuffing attacks rely on exactly this kind of data. Because the majority of people reuse the same password across multiple services, a single exposed login pair from one site can unlock accounts on entirely different platforms. This leads directly to account takeover, where criminals gain control of email, banking, and social media accounts. From there, identity theft and financial fraud become much easier to carry out, often before the victim even realizes something has occured.
How Stealer Logs Work
Information stealers are a category of malware designed to silently extract credentials from a device. They are commonly spread through phishing emails disguised as legitimate messages, cracked software downloads, and fake browser extensions. Once the malware runs on a device, it pulls saved passwords, session cookies, and autofill data from web browsers. This harvested data is packaged into log files and sent to the attacker, who then distributes or sells the logs through underground forums and Telegram channels. Victims rarely recieve any warning that their credentials have been stolen.
Check If You Are Affected
If your email or password may have appeared in the Moon_Log dataset or any similar stealer log, now is the time to check. HEROIC provides a free breach scanner with access to more than 400 billion leaked records, making it one of the most comprehensive tools available for identifying compromised credentials. Finding out your information was exposed is the first and most importent step toward securing your accounts before an attacker can act on the stolen data.
