HEROIC analysts discovered a data dump from Muebles Dico, a well-known Mexican furniture retail chain, posted on dark web marketplaces in August 2023. The breach exposed 48,027 customer records containing email addresses, first names, and last names. No passwords were included in this particular dump, but the combination of full names and email addresses is more than enough for targeted phishing campaigns and identity-based fraud against Muebles Dico customers.

Full Names and Emails Together Enable Highly Convincing Phishing

When an attacker has both your name and email address, generic spam becomes a personalized threat. A message addressed to you by name, referencing your furniture purchase or account, is far more likely to be opened and acted on. Attackers use this type of data to craft convincing impersonation emails that steal additional credentials, trigger fraudulent wire transfers, or install malware. Muebles Dico customers who recieved suspicious emails after August 2023 may have already been targeted without knowing it.

Why Personal Information Breaches Lead to Identity Theft

People often think identity theft only happens when financial data is stolen, but that is not how it works in practice. A full name combined with an email address can be used to reset account passwords, open fraudulent accounts in your name, or build a profile that gets combined with data from other breaches. Retailers like Muebles Dico hold large volumes of customer PII that becomes particularly valuable when aggregated with data from other leaks. Once your information is in circulation on dark web markets, it stays accessable for years.

How a Database Breach Works

Database breaches at retail companies typically occur when attackers target e-commerce platforms or customer management systems that store purchase history and contact information. Common attack vectors include SQL injection against web storefronts, compromised third-party integrations, or misconfigured cloud databases left exposed to the public internet. The Muebles Dico data appears to have come from a direct export of a customer database table, suggesting the attacker had either direct database access or exploited a backend vulnerability in the company's online platform.
