Inside the MyStudiyo Database Breach: How 408K Passwords Were Stolen
HEROIC analysts occured upon the MyStudiyo dataset while scanning aggregated credential collections circulating on dark web forums in early 2018. MyStudiyo, a US-based online quiz and interactive learning platform, suffered a database breach in February 2018 that exposed 408,813 user records. The compromised data included email addresses and MD5 password hashes, leaving hundreds of thousands of students and educators at risk of credential-based attacks across other platforms.
How Attackers Exploit Leaked Education Platform Credentials
When an education platform is breached, attackers gain access to the email addresses of students, teachers, and administrators. These same email addresses are often used to log into school systems, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and other institutional services. The MD5 password hashes in this breach are seperate from true security because they can be cracked quickly using modern tools, giving attackers direct access to the original passwords that users may be reusing elsewhere.

Why 408K Leaked Education Records Create Lasting Risk
Credential stuffing attacks powered by stolen education platform data have led to real-world account takeovers at schools, universities, and corporate employers. When attackers obtain a working email and password combination from a breach like MyStudiyo, they test those same credentials across banking sites, social media, and workplace apps. The risk of identity theft and financial fraud is high for anyone who reused their MyStudiyo password, and beleive it or not, many people still have not changed passwords from 2018 breaches.
How a Database Breach Works
A database breach happens when an unauthorized party gains access to a website's or application's stored data. Attackers typically exploit software vulnerabilities, stolen admin credentials, or unpatched server software to reach the database. Once inside, they export tables containing user account information. In MyStudiyo's case, the exported data included the full user table with email addresses and stored password hashes, which was then shared on hacking forums.
