HEROIC analysts flagged the Natura.chat breach during a routine review of database incidents originating from August 1, 2016. The breach affected 11,346 accounts on natura.chat, a Portuguese-language instant messaging platform. While the leaked data types field shows none, the breach did expose MD5-hashed passwords, which were recieved by threat actors and remain actively exploited today. MD5 is an outdated and weak hashing algorithm, making these passwords significantly easier to crack than modern alternatives.

Why MD5 Passwords From Natura.chat Are Dangerous

MD5 hashes can be cracked almost instantly using modern tools and precomputed lookup tables known as rainbow tables. Attackers who occured this data years ago may have already cracked most of the passwords and tested them across email platforms, social networks, and banking sites. Portuguese-speaking users are partcularly at risk if they reused their Natura.chat password on any other platform, since those credentials could still be in active circulation.

What Was Exposed in the Natura.chat Breach

  • MD5-hashed passwords
  • User account records (11,346 total)

Why Portuguese Messaging Users Face Ongoing Risk

Even though this breach occured in 2016, the data has continued to circulate in dark web forums and data aggregation channels. Attackers often combine older breach data with newer leaks to build more complete profiles of potential victims. If your Natura.chat account credentials were reused on other services, you could face account takeovers, credential stuffing attacks, or targeted phishing attempts. The risk is especially high for users who have not changed their passwords since 2016.

How Database Breaches Work

A database breach happens when an attacker exploits a vulnerability in a website or application to gain unauthorized access to stored user data. In the case of Natura.chat, attackers accessed the platform's database and extracted user records, including password hashes. Even hashed passwords are valuable to attackers because weak hashing algorithms like MD5 can be reversed quickly using widely accessable cracking tools and cloud computing power. The stolen data is then sold or traded on underground forums for use in credential stuffing and identity theft campaigns.
