NEF University Breach Contains Exactly 246,636 Leaked Email Accounts
HEROIC analysts identified the NEF University breach while monitoring breach aggregation forums frequented by credential stuffing actors, where the dataset had been circulating since August 2018. The incident occured on or around August 26, 2018, and exposed 246,636 records from this U.S.-based online learning platform serving K-12 STEM and job-related training courses. The exposed data included email addresses and MD5 hashed passwords, a combination that remains accessable to attackers using modern cracking tools and precomputed rainbow tables even years after the original breach.
MD5 Hashes and Student Emails Create a Dangerous Combination
The NEF University breach exposed email addresses belonging to students and learners alongside MD5 password hashes. MD5 is a cryptographically broken algorithm that can be reversed using rainbow tables and GPU-accelerated cracking rigs in a fraction of the time required for stronger algorithms like bcrypt. Attackers with access to the NEF University database can recover plaintext passwords and then use those credentials to attempt logins on email providers, financial platforms, and other educational accounts where the same password was reused. Educational accounts are partcularly targeted because students often reuse simple passwords across many platforms.
