HEROIC analysts identified a separate data breach record tied to Netflix, also dated September 27, 2015. This record covers a distinct batch of 169 exposed entries, each containing an email address and a password stored in plaintext. This is a separately tracked incident from another, smaller Netflix exposure HEROIC has documented from the same date, and the two record sets should not be treated as one another.

Why This Larger Batch of Netflix Passwords Is Still a Plaintext Problem

With 169 records, this batch is larger than some of the other small breaches HEROIC tracks, and the core issue is the same: these passwords were never hashed or encrypted. Anyone who obtains this data can read each password exactly as the account holder typed it, with no cracking tools or technical skill required. A streaming account might feel low value on its own, but the password behind it is frequently reused on far more sensitive accounts.

What Was Exposed

  • Email addresses
  • Passwords, stored and exposed in plaintext

Why This Matters

Because these 169 passwords require no cracking, they are immediately usable in credential stuffing attacks, where criminals test known email and password pairs against banking sites, email providers, and shopping accounts automatically. If someone in this batch reused their Netflix password elsewhere, that account is exposed to takeover right now, which can escalate quickly into identity theft or financial fraud.

How This Database Breach Happened

This incident is classified as a database breach, meaning the records were extracted directly from stored account data. Storing passwords in plaintext instead of using proper hashing is a serious security failure regardless of how many records are affected, since a single unauthorized access to the database instantly exposes every real password with no additional effort needed from an attacker.

Check If You Are Affected

If you have ever had a Netflix account, it is worth checking whether your email and password appear in this or the other Netflix exposure from the same date. HEROIC's free breach scanner checks your email against more than 400 billion leaked records, giving you an instant answer so you can change any reused passwords before someone else uses them.
