Identity Theft Risk Rises After the NETZERO MAIL ACCESS Combolist Leak
HEROIC analysts identified a small combolist labeled NETZERO MAIL ACCESS, uploaded by a Telegram user on 5 December 2024. Though modest in size at 9 records, the file follows the same format as much larger combolists: email addresses paired with plaintext passwords and the URLs of the login pages those credentials open, in this case tied to NetZero mail accounts.
Why This Is Dangerous
A small file does not mean small risk to the people in it. For each of the 9 accounts listed, an attacker holds a working email address and its plaintext password, paired with the exact site to use it on. That is everything needed to log straight into an email account, read private messages, reset other passwords, or impersonate the account owner.
What Was Exposed
- Email addresses
- Plaintext passwords
- URLs of the mail login pages tied to each account
Why This Matters
Email accounts are often the master key to someone's digital life. Anyone who gains access can trigger password resets on banking, shopping, or social media accounts linked to that inbox. If any of these 9 users reused their NetZero password on another site, the exposure spreads well beyond email, opening the door to broader identity theft.
How Combolists Work
A combolist is a compiled list of email or username and password pairs, usually assembled from older breaches, stealer logs, or previous leaks, then reformatted into simple lines of credentials and the site they belong to. Criminals load these lists into automated tools that try each pair against real login pages in bulk, a technique known as credential stuffing. Even a short list like this one gets shared freely on Telegram to build a seller's reputation or as a sample of a larger stash.
