In February 2024, HEROIC identified a stealer log titled 500 PCS - 29 February - Free Logs being given away on Telegram. Despite being offered for free, this dataset contains 6,229 records of real stolen credentials, each including an email address, a plaintext password, and the URL of the service where the login was captured. Free stealer log distributions are a common tactic used by threat actors to build reputation and attract buyers for premium datasets.

Free Does Not Mean Harmless: Plaintext Passwords in the Open

The word "free" in the title refers to the distribution model, not the impact. Every one of the 6,229 passwords in this dataset is stored in plaintext and fully exploitable. Because this dataset was distributed at no cost on Telegram, it reaches the widest possible audience of potential attackers, from sophisticated cybercriminal groups to amateur hackers just learning the trade. The low barrier to access makes this leak particularly dangerous.

What Was Exposed

  • Email addresses
  • Plaintext passwords
  • URLs of visited websites and services

How a Single Password Compromise Spirals Out of Control

When attackers obtain even one valid credential from a free stealer log, they immediately attempt to use it everywhere. Credential stuffing tools test the email and password pair across banking platforms, social media, streaming services, cloud storage, and corporate applications. Most people use the same password on multiple sites, so a single match from this 6,229-record dataset often provides entry into three, five, or even ten separate accounts belonging to the same person. The chain reaction only stops when the victim changes their password or the attacker runs out of services to test.

Free Stealer Logs: The Gateway Drug of Cybercrime

Free stealer log distributions serve a strategic purpose in the cybercriminal ecosystem. Threat actors release small batches of stolen credentials at no cost to prove the quality of their malware operations and attract paying customers for larger, premium datasets. The 500 PCS label indicates this release contains data from approximately 500 infected devices, each contributing multiple credential pairs. The infostealer malware responsible for generating these logs was likely distributed through phishing campaigns, fake software, or malicious browser extensions targeting U.S. internet users.

Check If Your Credentials Were Exposed

HEROIC monitors over 400 billion compromised records to provide comprehensive breach detection coverage. Use the HEROIC breach scanner to check if your email address or password was captured in the 500 PCS Free Logs release or any other known breach. Free stealer logs have the widest distribution, meaning your credentials may be in the hands of many different threat actors if they appear in this dataset.
