HEROIC analysts identified the ORTOPedia BR database breach on June 4, 2024, exposing 432 records belonging to customers of the Brazilian orthopedic e-commerce platform. The compromised dataset contained email addresses, usernames, first names, last names, and password hashes. The hashing algorithm used was pHpass, an older method that, while better than plain text storage, is increasingly susceptible to modern cracking hardware when weak or common passwords were chosen by users.

Why This Is Dangerous

Password hashes are not plaintext, but pHpass hashes can be cracked offline at high speed using GPU-accelerated tools. Once cracked, the recovered passwords are combined with the exposed email addresses and usernames to unlock accounts on ORTOPedia BR and any other service where the victim reused that password. The simultaneous exposure of full names creates a ready-made identity profile for targeted phishing and social engineering well after the initial breach date.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Address
  • Username
  • Password Hash (pHpass algorithm)
  • First Name
  • Last Name

Why This Matters

When email addresses and crackable password hashes are exposed together, attackers pursue three immediate objectives. First, credential stuffing: automated tools test the recovered email-and-password pairs against banking, social media, and e-commerce platforms at scale. Second, account takeover: any account where the password was reused falls to the attacker without a single phishing message. Third, identity fraud: the combination of full name, email, and username gives fraudsters enough detail to open lines of credit, file fraudulent tax returns, or impersonate the victim in further scams.

How Database Breaches Work

A database breach occurs when an attacker gains unauthorized access to an organization's backend database and extracts its contents. Common entry points include SQL injection vulnerabilities in web application code, compromised administrative credentials, misconfigured database permissions, or unpatched server software. Once inside, the attacker can silently export entire tables containing user registration data. The victim organization often does not detect the exfiltration for days or weeks, giving attackers a significant head start before notifications go out.
