The OTTOMAN CLOUD Dump: 1,156 Stolen Logins Hit the Dark Web
In May 2023, HEROIC analysts identified a stealer log file being distributed through a private Telegram channel under the name OTTOMAN CLOUD. The file contained 1,156 records harvested from infected devices, including email addresses, plaintext passwords, and the URLs of the specific websites where those credentials were in active use. The file was distributed with the label "fresh," a designation used in underground markets to indicate recently harvested credentials that have not yet been widely tested against live accounts. That label is not an accident -- it is a selling point, indicating that the window for successfull account takeover attempts is still open.
Why This Is Dangerous
Fresh stealer log credentials are among the most valueable stolen data available on dark web markets and private Telegram channels. With plaintext passwords already included, attackers do not need to crack anything. The URL data tells them exactly which services each victim uses, so they can target the highest-value accounts first: email inboxes, banking portals, and cryptocurrency wallets. Automated credential stuffing tools can work through 1,156 entries in minutes, running login attempts across dozens of platforms simultaneously while the victim remains compleetly unaware.
What Was Exposed
- Email Addresses
- Plaintext Passwords
- URLs (each credential paired with the specific site it belongs to)
Why This Matters
A single working email credential is often all an attacker needs. From an email inbox, they can trigger password resets on every linked service, from banking and investment accounts to government portals and subscription platforms. Identity theft becomes significantly easier when an attacker already holds verified credentials and knows exactly which platforms the victim uses. Many people included in stealer log files like OTTOMAN CLOUD never receive any notification of exposure. The first sign of trouble is typically an unauthorized login alert, a locked account, or an unexplained financial transaction -- by which time the attacker has already been inside the account and may have established persistant access.
How Stealer Log Malware Works
The OTTOMAN CLOUD dataset was not stolen from a company's servers. It was assembled from the output of infostealer malware running silently on individual victims' devices. Infostealers are lightweight malicious programs that query the browser's local password storage, extract every saved login, grab active session cookies, and collect autofill data. Everything is packaged into a structured log and transmitted automatically to the attacker. Common delivery methods include phishing emails, fake software installers, malicious browser extentions, and pirated game or application files. The malware runs in the background and completes its work in under a minute, with no visible sign on the infected device.
