The OurSports Central Breach Gave Hackers a Path to 10,982 Accounts
HEROIC analysts identified a database breach affecting OurSports Central, a sports news website, dating back to February 12, 2016. The exposed file contains 10,982 records, including email addresses, usernames, and passwords hashed with MD5.
Why the OurSports Central Breach Gave Attackers an Opening
MD5 is a weak, outdated hashing method. Freely available cracking tools and precomputed lookup tables can recover a large share of MD5-hashed passwords, particularly common or short ones. Once cracked, a password functions exactly like a stolen plaintext credential, paired here with a real email address and username.
What Was Exposed in the OurSports Central Breach
- Email addresses
- Usernames
- Passwords (hashed with MD5)
Why This Matters
A niche sports site might feel like a low-stakes account, but the login habits it exposes are not. If you registered on OurSports Central and reused that email and password combination on another site, whoever cracks the hash has a direct path into that other account. This is exactly how credential stuffing works: automated tools testing stolen logins across many services at once, hoping for a match.
How This Database Breach Happened
This breach fits the pattern of a direct database export, an attacker gaining access to OurSports Central's backend and extracting the email addresses, usernames, and password hashes for every registered user in a single action. Storing those passwords with MD5, rather than a modern hashing algorithm, made the data considerably easier to exploit once it started circulating.
