HEROIC analysts identified a database breach affecting Parkbench, a Canadian platform that builds hyperlocal, content-rich websites for neighborhoods and communities. The breach was traced to May 31, 2024, and the exposed dataset contains 620,172 records, including email addresses, first names, last names, and password hashes stored using the MD5 algorithm.

Why This Is Dangerous

MD5 is a decades-old hashing method that security researchers consider broken for protecting passwords. Attackers can run MD5 hashes through precomputed rainbow tables or modern cracking hardware and recover the original password in a matter of seconds to hours, especially if the password itself is short or common. That means every password hash in this breach should be treated as if it were exposed in plain text.

What Was Exposed From the Parkbench Breach

  • Email addresses
  • First names
  • Last names
  • Password hashes (MD5)

Why This Matters

Once an attacker cracks an MD5 password hash, they have your actual password, not just a scrambled version of it. If you used that same password anywhere else, from email to online banking to social media, attackers can attempt credential stuffing to break into those accounts too. Combined with your real name and email address, this data also supports convincing phishing attempts designed to trick you into handing over even more information.

How MD5 Password Breaches Happen

This breach appears to be a direct database compromise, meaning attackers gained access to Parkbench's stored user records rather than tricking an individual user into revealing their password. Organizations that still rely on MD5 to store passwords are especially vulnerable because, once a database like this is stolen, cracking the passwords is trivial compared to modern, properly salted hashing algorithms. That combination of a database breach and outdated hashing is why this data quickly ended up circulating on sites used for sharing compromised credentials.

Check If You Are Affected

If you have ever created an account on a Parkbench neighborhood site, it is worth checking whether your information is part of this breach. HEROIC's free breach scanner checks your email address against a database of more than 400 billion leaked records, including this incident, and tells you immediately if you have been exposed. Run a free scan today and update any reused passwords right away.
