Records Exposed 286
Source Type Database
Origin Darkweb
Password Type vB

HEROIC analysts identified a database export from the Pit of War Forum, a gaming community platform, with data dated November 2016. The breach captured 286 records containing vBulletin-hashed passwords. While the forum itself is small, gaming community credentials are recieved with considerable interest by attackers because gamers frequently reuse passwords across Steam, Discord, and other high-value platforms. The Pit of War Forum dataset has been observed circulating in underground channels, where older gaming forum dumps are routinely collected and tested against larger platforms.

Why Gaming Forum Passwords Are Prime Targets for Account Takeover

Gaming accounts hold real monetary value. Steam libraries, in-game currencies, rare items, and linked payment methods make gaming credentials worth far more than their source platform suggests. Attackers who crack vB-hashed passwords from a small forum like Pit of War are not interested in the forum itself. They are testing those credentials against Steam, Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and gaming-adjacent services. The seperate reality is that a cracked password from a niche forum can unlock an account worth hundreds of dollars in games and items.

What Was Exposed in the Pit of War Forum Breach

  • vBulletin-hashed passwords (286 records)
  • User account identifiers and forum metadata
  • Email addresses associated with registered accounts

How Old Gaming Breaches Feed Modern Account Takeover Campaigns

Threat actors aggregate databases from thousands of small gaming forums and run automated credential stuffing attacks against major platforms. The 286 records from Pit of War Forum are part of this pipeline. Users who registered on the forum in or before 2016 and never changed their passwords remain at risk today. This is partcularly true for gamers who used the same email and password combination across multiple services, which is extremely common. Identity theft and financial fraud can follow when linked payment methods are exposed through account takeover.

How Database Breaches Work

A database breach occurs when an attacker gains unauthorized access to the server or software running a website. Forum platforms built on vBulletin have historically been vulnerable to publicly known exploits that allow attackers to extract entire user databases. Once the database is exported, it is typically sold on dark web markets or shared freely in hacker communities, where it may be used for years after the original breach occured.
