HEROIC analysts discovered a data breach linked to Pornofint, a Russian adult content website, recorded on September 24, 2023. The breach exposed 29,902 user records in what appears to be a direct database dump. The stolen data included email addresses, MD5 password hashes, usernames, first names, last names, and IP addresses. The records were found circulating on dark web forums known for trading stolen credentials.

Why This Is Dangerous

MD5 is one of the weakest password hashing methods still in use. It was designed for speed, which means attackers can test billions of password guesses per second using common hardware. Most MD5 hashes from breaches like this can be cracked within minutes or hours. The addition of real names and IP addresses makes this breach especially concerning because it gives criminals both the login credentials and enough personal detail to build convincing phishing messages or extortion attempts.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Address
  • Password Hash (MD5)
  • Username
  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • IP Address

Why This Matters

Breaches involving adult content platforms carry unique risks. Users of these sites often prefer to keep their activity private, which makes them more suceptible to extortion if their account details become public. Beyond that, the email and cracked password combination opens the door to credential stuffing across banking, shopping, and social media accounts. Identity theft becomes significantly easier when attackers already have your full name, email, and a known password. Financial fraud can follow quickly once access to a secondary account is gained through these stolen credentials.

How Database Breaches Work

A database breach occurs when an attacker finds a way into a website's backend systems. This is most commonly done through SQL injection attacks, exploiting outdated software, or gaining access through stolen administrator credentials. Once access is gained, the attacker can pull the entire user database and export it as a file. That file is then posted or sold on dark web marketplaces. Because MD5 hashes require no special tools to crack, the passwords in a breach like this are effectively plain text in the hands of anyone with a modern computer. The breach may not have been discoverd by the website itself for weeks or even months.
