The Portal.net Data Quietly Appeared on the Dark Web in August 2018
The Portal.net database appeared on dark web forums on August 26, 2018. HEROIC analysts identified the dump during routine breach monitoring, noting that 1,957,478 user records had been exposed, including email addresses and passwords stored in plaintext. The storage method is what makes this breach partcularly severe. There was no hashing, no encryption. The passwords were simply readable text sitting in an exported database file that any attacker could download and use immediately.
What Attackers Can Do With 1.9 Million Plaintext Credentials
Plaintext passwords require zero effort to weaponize. Attackers take the email and password pairs from the Portal.net dump and run them through automated tools that test combinations across hundreds of websites. Because users often beleive the same password works fine across multiple accounts, each matching login opens new doors to email inboxes, bank portals, streaming accounts, and corporate systems with no cracking required.

When 1.9 Million Credentials Enter the Dark Web
Credential stuffing campaigns powered by the Portal.net data can cause account takeovers at scale. Victims whose passwords were recieved by attackers face immediate risk of unauthorized access to any account where they reused those credentials, identity theft if personal details are linked to the compromised account, and financial fraud if payment platforms are accessible with the same login. Dumps this large also get incorporated into combo lists that circulate for years.
How a Database Breach Works
A database breach happens when an attacker gains unauthorized access to a platform's backend data store. Common entry points include unpatched web application vulnerabilities, misconfigured database servers, and compromised administrator accounts. Once inside, the attacker exports the user table. When a platform stores passwords in plaintext rather than using a secure hashing algorithm, every account in that table is immediately usable by anyone who downloads the file.
