HEROIC's DarkHive system discovered the PowerNationTV breach, exposing 7,338 records on August 26, 2018. The compromised dataset, originating from this U.S.-based automotive content and entertainment platform, contained email addresses and bcrypt password hashes. The data surfaced in combolist compilations circulating among threat actors and credential stuffing operations targeting automotive and entertainment platforms.

Why This Is Dangerous

Although bcrypt hashing provides some protection, determined attackers with sufficient computing resources can crack weaker passwords over time. Users who have not changed their PowerNationTV credentials since 2018 remain at risk. More critically, the email and password combinations from this breach feed directly into automated credential stuffing tools that test the same login pairs across hundreds of other websites and services simultaneously. Even a single successful account takeover can cascade into financial fraud, identity theft, and further account compromises.

What Was Exposed

  • Email addresses
  • Bcrypt password hashes
  • Account registration data from the PowerNationTV automotive content platform

Why This Matters

Password reuse is one of the most exploited vulnerabilities in modern cybersecurity. Many users register on multiple platforms with the same email and password combination. Criminals who obtain the PowerNationTV dataset can attempt to use those same credentials on banking sites, email providers, social media accounts, and e-commerce platforms. Even password hashes provide value to attackers, who run them through cracking tools to recover the original plaintext. Any account where those credentials still work becomes an immediate target for unauthorized access and financial exploitation.

How Database Breaches Work

Database breaches at entertainment and media platforms typically occur through vulnerabilities in web application code, unpatched software, or misconfigured servers that allow attackers to extract stored user records. Once attackers gain database access, they can download all registered user data in bulk. Smaller platforms like PowerNationTV, which focus on content delivery rather than security infrastructure, often lack the dedicated security teams and monitoring tools that larger organizations employ. Breached data is then packaged and sold or traded across private forums, Telegram channels, and dark web marketplaces, where it is incorporated into combolist compilations used for large-scale credential stuffing campaigns.

Check If You Are Affected

HEROIC offers a free identity scanner searching over 400 billion records including data from the PowerNationTV breach. Visit heroic.com to check if your information was exposed. If your email appears in this dataset, change your PowerNationTV password immediately and update the same password anywhere else you have used it. Enable two-factor authentication on your important accounts to prevent unauthorized access even if your credentials are compromised.
