8,472 Hashed Passwords From the Regiocast Breach Surfaced on a Public Hacking Forum

The breach occured in August 2018 when the company's user database was compromised and the extracted data was shared on a well-known hacking forum. The exposed dataset contained 8,472 records pairing email addresses with SHA1 hashed passwords. While SHA1 hashing provides a layer of protection that plaintext storage does not, it is a weak algorithm by modern standards and can be cracked using widely available tools, making these password hashes a genuine threat to affected users years after the original incident was first discovered.
Why the Regiocast Breach Is Still a Real Risk
SHA1 is a hashing algorithm that was already considered outdated for password storage by 2018. Large precomputed databases known as rainbow tables allow attackers to reverse common SHA1 hashes almost instantly, without needing to run any cracking software at all.
