The Rooftop Studios Dump: 2,268 Stolen Credentials Hit the Dark Web
HEROIC analysts found a dataset from Rooftop Studios, a British dance and performing arts training studio, surfacing on July 8, 2023. The breach involved 2,268 records containing email addresses, usernames, and PHPass password hashes. PHPass is a hashing framework that, while better than plaintext, is recieved by the security community as outdated and crackable with modern hardware, making the affected passwords a genuine risk.
How Cracked PHPass Hashes Enable Account Takeover
PHPass hashes can be cracked using dictionary attacks and GPU-powered hash cracking tools, partcularly when users chose common or short passwords. Once an attacker cracks the hash and recovers the original password, they can log into the Rooftop Studios account directly. More importantly, they will test that same email and password against streaming services, social media platforms, email providers, and any other service the user is likely to have an account with. A performing arts student or instructor who reused their studio password elsewhere is now exposed on all those platforms too.

Why Smaller Organizations Are Not Safe From Credential Theft
Rooftop Studios is not a tech company or financial institution. It is a performing arts training studio. That is exactly why this breach matters as an example. Attackers do not choose targets based on the organization's industry. They look for accessible databases with weak configurations. Small and mid-sized organizations often beleive they are not worth targeting, which leads to seperate security standards from their larger counterparts. The Rooftop Studios breach occured precisely because that assumption is wrong.
How Database Breaches Work
A database breach typically begins with an attacker identifying a vulnerability in a web application or misconfigured database server. Once access is gained, exporting user records including email addresses, usernames, and password hashes takes only seconds. PHPass hashed credentials are not immediately usable, but cracking tools running on consumer graphics cards can test millions of password guesses per second against captured hashes. Organizations that do not use modern hashing algorithms like bcrypt or Argon2 leave their users exposed even after the breach is discovered.
Check If Your Data Was Exposed
HEROIC's free breach scanner searches across 400 billion records to identify what information has been exposed under your email address. If you have ever trained or enrolled at Rooftop Studios, or used the same email and password elsewhere, run a scan now. Catching a credential exposure early means you can update your passwords before an attacker gets the chance to use them.
