HEROIC's DarkHive intelligence system identified the Rootkit.com data breach, exposing 65,825 user records from a US-based security and hacking forum. The breach occured in February 2011 and compromised IP addresses, email addresses, usernames, and passwords stored using the weak CRC-32B hashing algorithm. The membership of this forum consisted heavily of security researchers, hackers, and IT professionals, making the breach particularly consequential given the privileged access many members likely held.


Why This Is Dangerous

CRC-32B is a checksum algorithm designed for data integrity verification, not password security. It is trivially reversible for common passwords and provides no meaningful protection against cracking. Thier passwords stored using this algorithm were effectively exposed in plain sight for any attacker with basic cracking tools. The forum's user base of security professionals means that many victims held access to corporate networks, research systems, and sensitive infrastructure, making credential reuse from this breach potentially catastrophic for downstream targets.
