In May 2024, HEROIC analysts identified a stealer log titled "New folder 2" uploaded to a Telegram channel, containing 1,057 records of email addresses, plaintext passwords, and browser URLs pulled directly from infected devices. Why This Is Dangerous: A file this size will not make headlines, but every record in it belongs to a real person whose device was compromised by information-stealing malware. Attackers do not need millions of records to do damage. One working email and password pair is often all it takes to break into an account. What Was Exposed: The leak includes email addresses, plaintext passwords, and the specific URLs those passwords unlock. Because the passwords were never hashed or encrypted, anyone who downloads the file can use them immediately. Why This Matters: Many people reuse the same password across several accounts. A password stolen from one site can often unlock email, banking, or social media elsewhere. This is exactly how credential stuffing works: attackers take stolen login pairs and test them automatically across hundreds of other websites. How a Stealer Log Like This Works: Stealer logs come from malware that infects a device, often through a pirated download, cracked software, or a malicious email attachment. Once installed, it quietly copies saved browser passwords, autofill data, and session details, then sends everything back to the attacker. The stolen data is bundled into a file, in this case named "New folder 2," and shared in Telegram channels used by cybercriminals to trade and sell stolen credentials. Check If You Are Affected: HEROIC's free breach scanner checks your email against more than 400 billion leaked records, including stealer logs like this one. Run a scan to see if your credentials appear in this leak or any other breach on file.
