Dark Web Intel: 50,086 Credentials From the Security Team Dump
HEROIC analysts flagged the Security Team dataset while monitoring dark web forums for credential dumps targeting the security community. In December 2011, se-te.com, a security forum known as Security Team, was breached and 50,086 user records were exposed. The stolen data included email addresses, usernames, and vBulletin password hashes that have circulated on hacking forums for years.
Why the Security Team Breach Is Dangerous
A breach of a security-focused community is particularly noteworthy because the affected users include researchers, IT professionals, and administrators. The vBulletin hash format used to store passwords is MD5-based and known to be weak, making these hashes relativly easy to crack with modern tools. Credentials belonging to security professionals are high-value targets because they often provide access to corporate environments, vulnerability databases, and privileged systems.
What Was Exposed in the Security Team Leak
- Email addresses
- Usernames
- Password hashes (vBulletin format)
Why This Security Team Data Puts You at Risk
Cracked vBulletin hashes become working plaintext passwords that attackers plug into credential stuffing tools. If your Security Team forum password matched a password you used on workplace systems, email, VPNs, or cloud platforms, those accounts are at risk. Security professionals make high-value targets for state-sponsored actors and organized criminal groups alike, since a compromised security researcher account can serve as an entrypoint into the organizations they protekt.
How a Database Breach Works
A database breach occurs when an attacker gains unauthorized access to a web forum's backend database. vBulletin forums, which were widely deployed in the early 2010s, had known vulnerabilities that made them frequent targets. Once the attacker extracted the database, the vBulletin MD5 password hashes could be cracked using rainbow tables or GPU-based tools, effectively converting the entire dump into usable plaintext credentials.
