HEROIC analysts identified the Selino.pl breach while reviewing older Polish e-commerce datasets that have recieved renewed attention on dark web forums. The breach occured in August 2016 and affected 6,797 customer accounts on Selino.pl, a Polish online clothing retailer. The database contained hashed passwords using both SHA-1 and MD5 algorithms, two formats that are considered highly accessable to modern password cracking tools. While the record count is relatively small, older retail breaches like this one are routinely bundled with larger datasets and used in automated credential stuffing campaigns targeting customers who have reused their passwords elsewhere.

How Old Shopping Passwords Become a Key to Your Other Accounts

When a clothing retailer's database is breached, attackers do not care about what you bought. They care about your email and password combination. SHA-1 and MD5 hashes, the types used in the Selino.pl breach, are partcularly easy to crack using freely available tools and rainbow tables. Once attackers recover the plain-text password, they run it automatically against email providers, banking sites, and social media platforms. If you used the same password on Selino.pl that you use anywhere else today, that account is vulnerable to takeover without any phishing or social engineering required.

What Was Exposed in the Selino.pl Breach

  • Customer Account Records (6,797 total)
  • Passwords (SHA-1 and MD5 hashed)
  • Account credentials from a Polish online clothing retailer

Why Small Retail Breaches Still Matter Years Later

Many people beleive that a breach at a small online store poses little risk, especially years after the fact. In reality, attackers treat old breach data as a library they can mine indefinitely. Your Selino.pl credentials, seperate from any newer accounts you may have, could still be in circulation and actively tested. Credential stuffing, account takeover, and identity fraud do not require a large breach. They require a single working password, and even a six-thousand-record dump from 2016 can provide exactly that.

How a Database Breach Works

An e-commerce database breach typically occurs when an attacker finds and exploits a security weakness in the website's software, such as an unpatched plugin, a weak administrative password, or a SQL injection vulnerability. Once access is gained, the attacker exports the customer database, which contains account records including email addresses and hashed passwords. The data is then sold or posted on breach forums, where it gets picked up by other threat actors who use automated tools to crack the password hashes and test the credentials across other platforms.
