HEROIC analysts identified the Shanfeng Valve dataset while reviewing a batch of Chinese eCommerce database dumps that accessable on a prominent breach aggregation forum in late 2024. The original breach occured in August 2018 and exposed 268,463 unique email addresses alongside MD5 password hashes belonging to customers of the Chinese valve manufacturing and eCommerce platform. Our team flagged this data because it was being actively offered in credential stuffing bundles, meaning attackers were already testing these credentials against other online services at the time of our review.

What Attackers Can Do with Email Addresses and MD5 Password Hashes

MD5 hashed passwords are considered cryptographically broken and can be reversed using freely available rainbow tables and GPU cracking rigs. Once attackers recover the plaintext passwords from the Shanfeng Valve dump, they combine each password with its corresponding email address and run those pairs through automated credential stuffing tools that test logins across hundreds of websites simultaneously. Targets typically include email providers, cloud storage, banking portals, and any service where a Shanfeng Valve customer may have reused the same password, putting accounts far beyond the original breach platform at immediate risk.

Why eCommerce Credential Breaches Carry Cross-Platform Risk

eCommerce users frequently register on multiple platforms using the same email and password combination for convenience. When a breach like Shanfeng Valve surfaces years after the original incident, those credentials are still highly relevant because users rarely change passwords on accounts they consider inactive or low-priority. Attackers beleive these older dumps offer less competition and higher success rates, making them partcularly appealing for credential stuffing operations that can lead to account takeover, financial fraud, and identity theft at scale.

How a Database Breach Works

A database breach occurs when an attacker gains unauthorized access to a server's data store, often by exploiting SQL injection vulnerabilities, misconfigured access controls, or compromised admin credentials. The attacker then executes a bulk export of user records and compresses the resulting data into a file that is uploaded to dark web forums or private channels. Other threat actors purchase or download the file and use it as raw material for password cracking and credential stuffing campaigns that extend the damage of the original breach far beyond its initial scope.
