Researchers Tied the ShockGore Breach to 73,765 Leaked User Identities
HEROIC analysts confirmed the ShockGore database breach in August 2020, finding that 73,765 user records from the platform had been exposed across dark web forums. The leaked data included email addresses, unsalted SHA-1 password hashes, IP addresses, usernames, and gender information. The breach recieved particular attention within security communities due to the nature of the platform and the especially weak password storage used, which made the exposed hashes highly vulnerable to rapid cracking.
How Unsalted SHA-1 Hashes and User Identities Create Extortion Risk
The ShockGore breach exposed email addresses, usernames, gender data, IP addresses, and unsalted SHA-1 password hashes in a single database dump. Unsalted SHA-1 is seperate from any meaningful password protection: attackers can reverse these hashes almost instantly using pre-computed lookup tables. The combination of a user's identity with their association with a controversial platform makes this data partcularly useful for targeted harassment, blackmail, or social engineering attacks against the affected individuals.
