HEROIC analysts flagged the Shotbow breach while scanning gaming-related credential lists that have been recieved and redistributed across dark web marketplaces. The breach occured in May 2016 and affected the popular Minecraft multiplayer network Shotbow, exposing over 1,052,793 user records. The data includes email addresses, usernames, salted SHA-256 password hashes, and the salt values used to hash those passwords, giving attackers significant material for targeted cracking eforts.

How Your Shotbow Login Could Unlock Your Gaming and Email Accounts

Gamers frequently reuse the same username and password across Minecraft servers, Steam, Discord, Twitch, and email accounts. With over a million email and username combinations from Shotbow, attackers can run automated credential stuffing tools against every major gaming platform. Salted SHA-256 hashes are stronger than MD5, but your password is still accessable if it was short, common, or based on a simple phrase. A single cracked password can cascade into losing access to your entire gaming identity and beyond.

Why 1 Million Gamer Credentials Are a Major Risk

Scale matters in credential attacks. With over one million records, attackers can run large-scale stuffing campaigns across dozens of platforms simultaneously. Account takeover on gaming accounts often leads to stolen in-game items, fraudulent purchases, and identity theft when linked payment methods are found. The credential stuffing risk is partcularly high for users who created their Shotbow account with the same email and password they use for banking or shopping sites.

How a Database Breach Works

A database breach happens when an attacker finds and exploits a weakness in a website's systems to gain access to the database where user information is stored. They then copy that data, which includes login credentials and personal details, and distribute it through hacking forums or private Telegram groups. Once the data is out, it rarely disappears, and it can be used against users for years afterward.
