The stealer log file known as STAKE_LOGS was originally pulled together on January 30, 2024. It sat quietly in circulation for more than two years before HEROIC analysts flagged it during a recent sweep of Telegram channels trading stolen data. In that time, 16,499 records of email addresses, plaintext passwords, and matching URLs have been available to anyone who came across the file.

Why the Delay Makes STAKE_LOGS More Dangerous

A two-year gap between when data leaks and when it gets widely noticed is exactly what makes stealer logs so effective for attackers. The longer a file circulates quietly, the more chances criminals have had to test the credentials, and the less likely victims are to still be thinking about a password they set years ago.

Because the passwords are stored in plaintext next to their matching site, there is no expiration date on how useful this data remains, especially for anyone who has not changed their password since.

What Was Exposed in This Breach

  • Email addresses
  • Plaintext passwords
  • URLs tied to each stolen login

Why This Matters

Old leaks are not harmless leaks. Attackers regularly recycle older stealer logs like STAKE_LOGS through credential stuffing tools, testing outdated password and email combinations against current accounts in case anything was never updated.

A match can still lead to account takeover today, followed by identity theft or financial fraud, even years after the original infection occured.

How a Leak Like STAKE_LOGS Stays Hidden So Long

Infostealer malware infects a device quietly, usually through a fake download or pirated software, then copies saved browser passwords, autofill data, and session cookies before sending them off. The resulting log often gets traded privately among smaller circles before it is ever widely shared or noticed by researchers.

Only when a file resurfaces on a larger Telegram channel or dark web forum, as STAKE_LOGS did recently, does it draw the kind of attention that leads to public disclosure.
