In February 2024, HEROIC analysts uncovered a stealer log named "STAKE_LOGS" shared on a public Telegram channel by an anonymous uploader. The file contained 7,299 records pulled directly from infected devices, including email addresses, plaintext passwords, and the URLs tied to each login.

The Real Risk Behind Plaintext STAKE_LOGS Passwords

Because these passwords were stored in plaintext, no decryption or cracking is needed to use them. Anyone who gets ahold of this file can open it and immediately see working usernames and passwords.

Each record also includes the exact URL where the credential works, turning the log into a seperate, ready made list of accounts an attacker can log into right away.

From Leaked Logins to Credential Stuffing and Fraud

Stealer logs like this one are a favorite tool for credential stuffing, where attackers automatically try the same email and password combination across dozens of other websites. Because so many people reuse passwords, one leaked login can definately unlock several accounts at once.

From there, the path to account takeover, identity theft, and financial fraud is short. A compromised email account alone can be used to reset passwords on banking apps, shopping sites, and social media.

Inside the Malware Behind Stealer Logs

Stealer malware typically spreads through pirated software, cracked games, or malicious email attachments. Once it lands on a device, it quietly pulls saved browser passwords, autofill fields, and browsing history without the victim noticing anything unusual.

The stolen data is then bundled into a single log file, like STAKE_LOGS, and either sold or given away for free on Telegram channels dedicated to trading stolen credentials.
