In February 2024, HEROIC analysts documented a stealer log file called STAKE_LOGS after it was uploaded by a Telegram user. The file contains exactly 12,464 records, each one pairing an email address, a plaintext password, and the URL of the account it unlocks. The data was pulled directly from malware infected devices, not from a hacked company database.

Why This Is Dangerous

Every password in STAKE_LOGS is stored in plaintext, meaning there is nothing standing between an attacker and a working login. No decryption, no guessing, no brute force needed. Add the matching URL and email, and a criminal has a complete, ready to use set of credentials for over 12,000 accounts.

What Was Exposed

  • Email addresses
  • Plaintext passwords
  • URLs tied to each set of credentials

Why This Matters

Data like this is the raw fuel behind credential stuffing attacks, where automated tools test the same login across many sites at once. If even one password was reused elsewhere, it can lead straight to account takeover, financial fraud, or identity theft, especially if any of the exposed URLs point to banking or payment platforms.

How Stealer Log Breaches Work

Stealer logs come from info-stealing malware that hides inside pirated software, fake game cheats, or malicous downloads. Once it lands on a device, the malware harvests saved browser passwords and site URLs, then compiles them into a single log. Sellers and hobbyists alike circulate these logs through Telegram channels, which is exactly how STAKE_LOGS ended up online.
