Super Sonntag Data Breach Exposes 11,445 German News Accounts
HEROIC's DarkHive intelligence system discovered the Super Sonntag data breach, exposing 11,445 records in October 2018. Super Sonntag is a German-language free weekly newspaper serving regional communities in Saxony-Anhalt, published by Super Sonntag Verlag GmbH. The compromised data included email addresses and MD5 password hashes, putting affected users at risk of credential-based attacks and account takeover.
Why This Is Dangerous
Attackers who obtain MD5-hashed passwords can crack them rapidly using rainbow tables and modern GPU-accelerated tools, since MD5 is a weak and deprecated algorithm for password storage. Once plaintext passwords are recovered, cybercriminals attempt to log into other online services using those same credentials. Regional news platform users often share passwords across multiple accounts, amplifying the damage from a single breach significantly.
What Was Exposed
- Email Address
- Password Hash (MD5)
Why This Matters
Credential stuffing attacks rely on exactly this type of breach data, using automated tools to test leaked email and password combinations across banking portals, social media, and e-commerce sites. The Super Sonntag breach data has been circulating in dark web forums since 2018, giving attackers years to exploit it. Even users who have since updated their passwords elsewhere remain at risk if they reused the same password on other platforms before changing it. Identity thieves can also use exposed email addresses to craft convincing phishing campaigns targeting the German-speaking community.
How Database Breaches Work
A database breach occurs when attackers gain unauthorized access to a website's backend database, typically through SQL injection vulnerabilities, misconfigured server settings, or stolen administrative credentials. Once inside, they export user tables containing account information in bulk, including emails and hashed passwords. The stolen data is then sold or shared on dark web forums and Telegram channels, where other threat actors purchase and exploit it. Smaller regional media platforms like Super Sonntag often lack the dedicated security resources of larger organizations, making them attractive and achievable targets for opportunistic attackers.
