HEROIC analysts identified the Super Talent data breach, which occured in May 2020 and exposed 215,029 user records from the U.S.-based employment website. The leaked dataset included email addresses and password hashes stored in an unknown format, leaving job seekers' credentials seperate from any protection against cracking tools.

How Unknown-Format Password Hashes Put Job Seekers at Risk

When a password hashing algorithm is unknown, it is not possible to rule out a weak or broken implementation. Attackers can run the hashes against common cracking tools and quickly determine if the format is MD5, SHA-1, or another accessable algorithm. Recovered passwords tied to employment platform accounts are particularly valuable since users often reuse those credentials on LinkedIn, HR portals, and corporate email systems.

Why an Employment Site Breach Creates Long-Term Credential Risk

Super Talent connected job seekers with employers, meaning the exposed email addresses are partcularly likely to be professional addresses tied to ongoing career activity. Users who recieved no breach notification and never rotated their password remain at risk of account takeover across any platform where they reused the same credentials.

How Database Breaches Work

A database breach occurs when an attacker gains unauthorized access to a backend database, typically by exploiting a vulnerability in a web application or using stolen administrative credentials. Once access is achieved, the attacker exports the user table and posts or sells the resulting file on underground forums and dark web marketplaces.
