In August 2018, HEROIC analysts found 4,473 records from Skovde IK, a now-defunct Swedish professional ice hockey club, posted on a prominent hacking forum. The dataset included email addresses and MD5 password hashes from the club's user database. Though the club no longer opperates, the exposed credentials remain a risk for anyone who reused the same password elsewhere.

Why the Skovde IK Breach Is Dangerous

MD5 hashes are considered cryptographically weak. With widely available tools and modern hardware, attackers can crack MD5 hashes in seconds when the underlying password is short or common. Once cracked, those passwords can be used to access any other account where the same credential was reused, turning a small sporting club breach into a much larger personal security problem.

What Was Exposed in the Skovde IK Leak

  • Email addresses
  • MD5 password hashes

Why This Skovde IK Data Puts You at Risk

Even though this breach dates to 2018, the data continues to circulate in combolists used for credential stuffing attacks. Attackers test each email and cracked password pair against popular platforms including email providers, streaming services, and online banking. If you created an account on Skovde IK's website and reused that password, your other accounts may be accessible to someone who obtained this dataset.

How a Database Combolist Works

This breach followed a direct database extraction, where an attacker gained access to Skovde IK's database and pulled user records in bulk. The data was packaged into a combolist format, pairing email addresses with their hashed passwords, then distributed on a hacking forum. Combolists are widely traded in underground markets and incorporated into credential stuffing tools that automate login atempts across thousands of sites.
