HEROIC analysts identified a database breach tied to the Toontown Alley Forums (toontownalley.com), a now-defunct community for the online game Toontown Online, that exposed 51,077 accounts. The breach dates back to April 1, 2016, but the data has continued to circulate in password compilations used by credential stuffing tools. The exposed records include usernames and passwords protected with a mix of bcrypt and vBulletin hashing.

Toontown Alley Forums Leaked in 2016. Passwords Still Work Today.

A decade is a long time for a password to stay in circulation, but that is exactly what has happened here. Some of the passwords in this breach were protected with bcrypt, a stronger hashing method, while others used vBulletin's older format, which is easier to crack. Anyone who has not changed a password from this account since 2016, or who reused it elsewhere, is still exposed to the exact same risk today as they were the day the forum was breached.

What Was Exposed in the Toontown Alley Forums Breach

  • Usernames
  • Passwords protected with bcrypt and vBulletin hashing

Why This Matters for the 51,077 Accounts Involved

A gaming forum for a defunct game feels like ancient history, but the account is still tied to real people who may still be using the same login elsewhere. Once a password is cracked, it becomes usable in credential stuffing attacks, where attackers try the same username and password combination across banking, email, and shopping sites. That can lead to account takeover, identity theft, or financial fraud, all triggered by a login created for a game that no longer exists.

How a Database Breach Like This Happens

A database breach happens when an attacker gains direct access to the backend storage where a site keeps its user accounts, rather than going after individuals one at a time. Once inside, the attacker can export the entire member table, capturing every username and password hash in one move. That single action is why data from a niche gaming forum that closed years ago can still show up in credential stuffing tool compilations today.
