HEROIC analysts discovered the TOR_LOG stealer log dataset in July 2023, when a Telegram user publicly shared a file containing 5,434 compromised records. The data originated from infected computers and included email addresses, plaintext passwords, and URLs harvested directly from victims' browsers and applications. This type of exposure is particulary dangerous because the credentials are ready for immediate use by attackers.

Why This Is Dangerous

Stealer logs like this one give cybercriminals instant access to working login credentials. Because the passwords are stored in plaintext, attackers do not need to crack or decode anything. They can immediatly begin testing these credentials across popular websites, banking portals, email providers, and corporate systems. The inclusion of URLs tells attackers exactly which sites and services each victim was using, making targeted attacks far more efficent.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Addresses
  • Plaintext Passwords
  • URLs (websites and services accessed by victims)

Why This Matters

When email addresses and plaintext passwords are exposed together, the risk of account takeover is severe. Attackers use automated tools to test stolen credentials against dozens of platforms simultaneously, a technique known as credential stuffing. If a victim reused the same password on multiple sites, a single breach can cascade into a full identity theft event. Financial accounts, social media profiles, and workplace systems all become vulnerable the moment credentials are leaked.

How Stealer Logs Work

Stealer logs are created by a type of malicious software called an infostealer. Once this malware infects a device, it silently collects saved passwords from browsers, session tokens, email credentials, and a list of websites the victim visited. All of this data is packaged into a log file and sent to the attacker. These log files are then sold or freely distributed on Telegram channels and dark web forums, reaching hundreds of criminals within hours of being posted. The victim typically has no idea their information has been collected.
