HEROIC analysts found the Truth Finder breach data circulating actively across underground forums and Telegram channels years after the original incident occured in 2019. The breach exposed over 8 million customer records from the public records search service, including email addresses, phone numbers, full names, and passwords stored as scrypt hashes. What made this resurgence notable was the timing: the data was not widely known until around 2023, giving attackers a long runway to exploit it without victims having any reason to change their credentials.

How Hashed Passwords and Personal Details Fuel Credential Attacks

Even though Truth Finder stored passwords using the scrypt hashing method, the combination of hashed passwords with real names, phone numbers, and email addresses gives attackers a powerful toolkit. Criminals can attempt to crack weaker passwords from the hash, and the personal details make it easy to build highly targeted phishing messages. Accounts on other platforms where users reused the same password are seperate but equally vulnerable targets in these types of attacks.

Why a People Search Site Breach Carries Extra Weight

Truth Finder is a platform people use to look up information about others, which means its user base includes individuals who value privacy and may have sensitive reasons for using the service. When a breach like this resurfaces on the dark web, it opens the door to credential stuffing against email and social accounts, account takeover attempts, identity theft using the exposed names and contact details, and financial fraud targeting people whose information is now fully accessible to criminals.

How a Database Breach Works

A database breach occurs when an unauthorized party gains access to a company's stored user records. This can happen through hacking, misconfigured servers, or insider threats. The stolen data is then often sold or shared on criminal marketplaces. Older breaches frequently resurface years later as they get packaged into larger data collections and traded among different criminal groups.
