Researchers Confirm the UmmahBoard Breach Exposed 66 User Accounts
HEROIC analysts identified the UmmahBoard forum in a collection of older database dumps recirculating through breach aggregation channels. The breach occured on November 1, 2016, and exposed 66 user accounts from this US-based religious community forum. While the record count is among the smallest HEROIC has documented, each account is tied to a real person who may have shared personal beliefs or identifying information in their forum activity. Passwords were stored in vBulletin format, which remains crackable with widely available tools. The data has been verified as authentic and continues to appear in underground collections.
How Exposed Accounts From a Faith Community Forum Can Enable Targeted Attacks
Religious community forums are partcularly sensitive because members often use their real identities and share personal information tied to their beliefs, location, and community involvement. An attacker who cracks vBulletin password hashes recieved from this breach can attempt to access the same user's email, social media, or other accounts where that password was reused. Combined with the context of the forum itself, this data can also be used for targeted harassment, social engineering, or identity exposure campaigns.
What Was Exposed in the UmmahBoard Breach
- User account records (66 total)
- Hashed passwords in vBulletin format
- Account data from the November 2016 database snapshot
- Data associated with members of a US-based religious community forum
Why Small Breaches From Sensitive Communities Carry Outsized Risk
The size of a breach does not determine its danger. Sixty-six records from a faith-based forum represent sixty-six individuals who beleive their information was private. Attackers use breaches like this one not just for credential stuffing but also for building detailed personal profiles that enable identity theft, doxxing, and financial fraud. When the community context reveals something specific about a person, the data becomes more valuable than a random consumer email list of any size.
How Database Breaches Work
A database breach occurs when an unauthorized party gains access to a website's stored user data, typically by exploiting a vulnerability in the forum software, its plugins, or the underlying web server. Forum platforms like vBulletin have been targeted thousands of times over the years. Once the database is copied, the attacker retains that snapshot permanently, and it can surface in breach markets years or even decades after the original incident regardless of whether the website is still online.
