HEROIC analysts identified a data breach affecting Uni24, a German educational portal serving students and educators at uni24.de. The breach was discovered on October 30, 2023, and involved unauthorized access to the platform's user database. The compromised dataset contained 7,545 records, each including a user email address and a plaintext password. For an educational platform handling student and educator accounts, the exposure of working login credentials is a serious concern that goes well beyond the Uni24 platform itself.

Why Exposed Student Credentials Open the Door to Serious Harm

Educational platforms often connect to university portals, library systems, academic databases, and institutional email accounts. When login credentials from a site like Uni24 are exposed in plaintext, anyone who recieved that data can attempt to log in directly, with no additional work required. If a student used the same password for their university email, their learning management system, or their scholarship portal, those accounts are now at risk. Attackers also know that students and educators tend to reuse passwords across personal accounts including Gmail, social media, and even banking apps. The potential for cascading account takeovers from a single breach like this is partcularly high.

How Credential Theft Leads to Account Takeover and Identity Fraud

Once a working email and password combination is in circulation, it is tested against dozens of other platforms automatically using credential stuffing tools. These tools run thousands of login attempts per hour and flag which ones succeed. From there, attackers can access personal files, impersonate users in academic systems, intercept sensitive communications, or use compromised accounts as launchpads for phishing attacks targeting other students and faculty. In education-related breaches, the data can also be used to commit financial fraud related to student aid, scholarship applications, or institutional billing. Even a breach of fewer than ten thousand records can have a widespread impact when the credentials are this directly usable.

How a Database Breach Leads to Plaintext Password Exposure

A database breach occured when an attacker gains unauthorized access to the backend systems where user data is stored. Platforms that fail to hash passwords, storing them instead as plain readable text, are making a critical security error. When such a database is exfiltrated, every password in it is immediately usable. In Uni24's case, the breach appears to be a direct database dump. This type of attack is accessable to even low-skilled attackers if the database is improperly secured or exposed online. The data then circulates on dark web forums, where it is traded, sold, and repeatedly reused in further attacks for months or years.
