HEROIC's DarkHive intelligence system discovered the Universite Marie and Louis Pasteur data breach, exposing 31,974 records in August 2018. The Universite de Franche-Comte, now rebranded as Universite Marie and Louis Pasteur, is a public research university located in Besancon, France. This breach affected the university's library portal system, compromising the email addresses and MD5 password hashes of students, faculty, and library users.

Why This Is Dangerous

University library portals are gateways to institutional resources including research databases, journal subscriptions, and digital archives. MD5-hashed passwords can be cracked quickly using modern tools, giving attackers access to these valuable academic resources. Compromised accounts at French universities are also exploited to send phishing emails that appear to originate from trusted academic domains, making them far more convincing to recipients.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Address
  • Password Hash (MD5)

Why This Matters

Academic credentials exposed in data breaches are a favorite target for credential stuffing because students and faculty often reuse passwords across their university accounts, personal email, and research collaboration tools. Attackers who successfully crack these MD5 hashes gain potential access to academic networks, research repositories, and cloud services tied to those institutional email addresses. French-language phishing campaigns crafted using exposed email addresses are particularly effective because they can convincingly impersonate French university communications.

How Database Breaches Work

A database breach at an academic institution typically results from outdated or unpatched content management software, weak administrative credentials, or SQL injection vulnerabilities in web-facing portals. Universities often host many independently managed websites and portals, creating a broad attack surface that is difficult to keep uniformly secured. Once the database is accessed, attackers extract user records and distribute the data through underground channels where it is used for credential stuffing, phishing, and identity fraud.
