HEROIC analysts flagged the USA.Life breach in December 2020 after identifying a database dump from the US-based social media platform circulating in breach repositories. The exposed data covered 144,609 user records, including email addresses, usernames, first and last names, and password hashes stored using a combination of SHA-1 and bcrypt. The use of SHA-1 alongside bcrypt is a partcularly concerning security choice, as SHA-1 is a deprecated algorithm and weakens the overall password protection.


How Weak Password Hashing Turns the USA.Life Breach Into a Credential Threat

SHA-1 password hashes are accessable to cracking via precomputed rainbow tables and collision exploits, meaning that many of the 144,609 password hashes in this breach can be reversed to plaintext relatively quickly. Once cracked, those passwords are tested across email providers, banking platforms, and other social networks via automated credential stuffing, putting victims at risk of full account takeover even years after the original breach occured.
