In November 2023, HEROIC's threat intelligence team discovered a stealer log file uploaded to a public Telegram channel by an anonymous user. The file contained 3,421 records tied to Usmancloud, exposing email addresses, plaintext passwords, and URLs from compromised endpoints. The data became publicly accessable through Telegram channels monitored by cybersecurity researchers, meaning anyone with the right tools could download and use those credentials.

Why This Is Dangerous

Stealer logs are collected by malware that runs silently in the background on infected computers. When your device is infected, the malware captures every password you type, every website you visit, and every account you log into. That information is then packaged and sold or shared online. In this breach, passwords were stored in plaintext, meaning they were not encrypted or hashed in any way. Anyone who got hold of this file recieved a ready-to-use list of working credentials.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Addresses
  • Plaintext Passwords
  • URLs (websites and services accessed by victims)

Why This Matters

Plaintext passwords are the most dangerous type of leaked credential. There is no decryption step required for an attacker. They can take your email and password from this list and immediately try to log into your bank, your email, your social media, and any other service where you use the same password. This type of attack is called credential stuffing, and it is one of the most common ways accounts get taken over. The URLs in the leak also reveal which services the affected users were logged into, giving attackers a roadmap of where to try those credentials first.

How Stealer Log Breaches Work

A stealer log breach begins when malware is installed on a victim's computer, often through a fake software download, a malicious email attachment, or a compromised website. Once installed, the malware runs in the background and records login credentials, browser cookies, and other sensitive data. This information is uploaded to a server controlled by the attacker, then compiled into log files. These files are then sold on dark web marketplaces or uploaded to platforms like Telegram, where other criminals can download and use them. The entire process can occure within hours of infection, meaning your credentials can be circulating online before you even notice anything is wrong.

Check If You Are Affected

HEROIC offers a free data breach scanner that searches through over 400 billion exposed records, including stealer log files like this one. If your email address or password appeared in this breach or any other, the scanner will alert you so you can take action before an attacker does. Seperate passwords for every account and enabling two-factor authentication are the most effective steps you can take to protect yourself after a breach like this.
