HEROIC's DarkHive intelligence system uncovered the VB Team data breach, exposing 57,766 records. The breach occured in June 2011 and affected users of VB Team, a Cambodia-based software forum at vbteam.info. Compromised data included IP addresses, email addresses, usernames, and vBulletin-format password hashes.

Why This Is Dangerous

vBulletin password hashes from 2011 use older salting and hashing methods that are crackable with modern tools. Once cracked, these credentials are tested against current email services, software download sites, and developer platforms where users commonly reuse forum passwords. IP addresses from 2011 can still reveal patterns about where victims lived and worked, providing attackers with additional context for social engineering attacks.

What Was Exposed

  • IP Address
  • Email Address
  • Username
  • Password Hash (vBulletin format)

Why This Matters

Software forum users tend to be technically literate individuals who may have access to code repositories, developer tools, and enterprise software systems. Credentials from VB Team that get cracked and reused can lead to compromised development environments, source code theft, or unauthorized access to software deployment systems. The breach data has persisted in underground markets for over a decade, getting merged into credential lists used in automated attacks against current software platforms and developer services where victims who reused thier passwords remain vulnerable.

How Database Breaches Work

Forum platforms running vBulletin software were frequent targets in 2011 because the software had known SQL injection vulnerabilities that attackers actively exploited. An attacker identifying a vulnerable installation could extract the entire user database in a single automated operation. The resulting database file was archived and distributed across hacker forums. IP addresses captured during user registration provided additional data points that made the breach dataset more valuable to buyers looking to build comprehensive target profiles.
