The wavecloud_free Leak: 5,966 Passwords Exposed. Yours Might Be One.
HEROIC analysts identified a stealer log breach originating from a Telegram channel in July 2023. A threat actor operating under the name wavecloud_free uploaded 454 log files containing 5,966 records of compromised credentials. The exposed data was collected by malware installed on victim devices and included email addresses, plaintext passwords, and URLs tied to specific online accounts.
Why This Is Dangerous
Stealer logs are among the most actionable data types in the criminal underground. Because the passwords are stored in plaintext and are paired directly with the URLs where they were used, attackers do not need to crack anything. They can immediately attempt to log into banking portals, email accounts, and corporate systems using exactly the credentials that were stolen from infected devices. Every record in this dataset is a ready-to-use key to someone's online life.
What Was Exposed
- Email Addresses
- Plaintext Passwords
- URLs (website addresses linked to each credential pair)
Why This Matters
When email and password pairs are exposed alongside the exact websites they belong to, the risk is immediate. Attackers use this data for credential stuffing, which means they try the same login details across dozens of other platforms. Most people reuse passwords, so a single stolen credential can open accounts on social media, online banking, shopping, and workplace tools. The result is account takeover, identity theft, and in many cases, financial fraud that takes months to untangle.
How Stealer Logs Work
A stealer log is the output of a type of malware known as an information stealer. These programs are often delivered through phishing emails, fake software downloads, or malicious browser extensions. Once installed on a device, the malware silently harvests saved passwords from browsers, cookies, and autofill data. It then sends this information back to the attacker, who collects it into log files and sells or distributes them through dark web forums and messaging platforms like Telegram. The victim usually has no idea their credentials have been stolen until they recieve an alert or notice suspicious activity on their accounts.
