In November 2025, HEROIC analysts discovered a stealer log file uploaded to Telegram containing 3,660 records of Hotmail accounts. Each record included an email address, a plaintext password, and the URL of the site the login was harvested from, pulled directly off infected devices.

Why a Stealer Log Leak Is Different From a Typical Breach

Most breaches happen when a company's server gets hacked. This one is different. The data came straight from victims' own computers, collected quitely by malware while people browsed the web and logged into their accounts as normal. Since the passwords sit in plaintext, there is no encryption for an attacker to break through.

What Was Exposed

  • Email addresses (Hotmail)
  • Plaintext passwords
  • URLs of the login pages used

Why This Matters Beyond Just Email

A leaked Hotmail password rarely stays contained to one account. People often reuse the same password across banking, shopping, and social apps, which makes credential stuffing easy for attackers. From there, it is a short hop to account takeover, identity theft, and financial fraud.

How a Stealer Log Breach Actually Works

A stealer log begins with malware, often hidden inside a cracked program, fake update, or phishing attachment. Once it runs, the malware digs through the victim's browser for saved passwords, session cookies, and autofill details. Everything gets bundled into a single file and uploaded to places like Telegram, where it can be downloaded by anyone within minutes. This is exaclty how the 3,660 records in this leak ended up publicly available.
