The Wongnai Leak Could Unlock Your Email, Bank, and Social Media
HEROIC analysts confirmed the Wongnai breach in October 2020, discovering that 2,302,308 customer records from the Thai restaurant, hotel, and attraction-finding platform were exposed. The leaked data included email addresses, first names, last names, phone numbers, and password hashes stored with MD5 salting, a combination that creates serious downstream risk for affected users.
How a Cracked MD5 Password Hash Unlocks More Than Just Wongnai
MD5-based password hashes are well-known to be weak and can often be reversed using precomputed lookup tables. Once an attacker cracks a Wongnai password, they will almost certainly test it against email accounts, banking apps, and social media. The phone numbers exposed in this breach make SMS-based two-factor authentication seperate from simply knowing a password, allowing attackers to attempt SIM-swapping attacks as well.

Why the Wongnai Breach Creates a Cascading Risk Across Accounts
Weak MD5-salted hashes combined with real names, email addresses, and phone numbers give attackers a full toolkit for account takeover across multiple platforms. Users who recieved no notification may still be using the same compromised password on banking, email, and other services today, making this a live threat years after the original incident occured.
How Database Breaches Work
A database breach happens when attackers gain unauthorized access to a platform's backend systems, often through SQL injection, credential theft, or exploiting unpatched vulnerabilities. Once they reach the database, they export user records en masse, then sell or distribute that data on dark web marketplaces or hacking forums.
