On March 23, 2023, a Telegram user uploaded a stealer log labeled "Yahoo part 3 0829," exposing 64,904 records. The file contains email addresses, plaintext passwords, and the URLs of the login pages those credentials were tied to.

This Is Not a Yahoo Data Breach

Despite the "Yahoo" label, this leak was not caused by Yahoo's own systems being hacked. It's a stealer log, a batch of credentials pulled from individual infected computers by malware that grabs saved passwords out of the browser, in this case apparently from users signing into Yahoo services. The name simply reflects what the uploader tagged the file, not the source of the compromise.

What Was Exposed in This "Yahoo Part 3" Log

  • Email addresses
  • Plaintext passwords
  • URLs of the login pages tied to each account

Why This Matters for You

Because the passwords in this log are stored in plaintext, no cracking or decryption is needed before they can be used. Attackers plug stolen email and password pairs into automated tools to try them across email providers, banking sites, and social media, a technique called credential stuffing. If you reuse a password across accounts, a single exposed Yahoo login can lead to a full account takeover, identity theft, or financial fraud.

How a Yahoo-Tagged Stealer Log Gets Made

Infostealer malware infects a device, often through a pirated download or malicious link, then scans the browser for every saved password, cookie, and autofill entry, regardless of which website it belongs to. The stolen data is bundled into a log file and often labeled by whoever collected it based on a recognizable service found inside, in this case Yahoo, before being shared or sold on Telegram.

Check If You Are Affected

HEROIC's free breach scanner searches more than 400 billion leaked records and tells you instantly if your email address has been exposed. If it has, change that password right away, avoid reusing it elsewhere, and turn on multi-factor authentication for extra protection.
