HEROIC's DarkHive intelligence system discovered the Zabzaa data breach, exposing 21,901 records. The breach occured in August 2018, affecting users of this Thai entertainment platform. The leaked data includes email addresses and SHA1 password hashes, putting thousands of users at risk of credential-based attacks.

Why This Is Dangerous

Attackers who obtain email addresses paired with SHA1 password hashes can use cracking tools to recover plaintext passwords quickly. SHA1 is considered a weak hashing algorithm and is vulnerable to rainbow table attacks. Once passwords are cracked, attackers gain access to the original Zabzaa accounts and can use those same credentials to break into banking, email, and social media accounts where users recieve communications.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Address
  • Password Hash (SHA1)

Why This Matters

Even though this breach occured in 2018, the data continues to circulate on dark web forums and in credential dumps. Attackers use old breach data in credential stuffing attacks, trying username and password combinations across hundreds of websites automatically. Users who reused thier Zabzaa password on other services face ongoing account takeover risk. Identity thieves can also use email addresses to target victims with phishing campaigns designed to steal more sensitive personal information.

How Database Breaches Work

A database breach happens when attackers gain unauthorized access to a website's backend database, often through SQL injection vulnerabilities, misconfigured servers, or compromised admin credentials. Once inside, they export user tables containing account information in bulk. The stolen database is then sold or shared on hacking forums. Organizations that fail to patch known vulnerabilities or use outdated software are especially vulnerable to this type of attack, which can expose thousands or even millions of accounts in a single incident.
