HEROIC's DarkHive intelligence system discovered the Zewia Travel Holidays data breach, exposing 17,958 records in August 2018. Zewia Travel Holidays is a Kerala-based Indian tour operator specializing in travel packages and holiday arrangements for domestic and international destinations. The compromised data included email addresses and MD5 password hashes, putting registered customers at risk of credential-based attacks.

Why This Is Dangerous

Travel agency platforms hold personal account data from customers who have provided contact information, travel preferences, and booking details to plan vacations and tours. MD5 password hashes are among the weakest forms of password storage, as they can be cracked within seconds using precomputed rainbow tables that are freely available online. Customers who reused their Zewia Travel Holidays credentials on other platforms face account takeover risks across banking apps, email accounts, and other travel or e-commerce sites.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Address
  • Password Hash (MD5)

Why This Matters

The Zewia Travel Holidays breach exposes nearly 18,000 Indian travelers to credential stuffing and account takeover attacks. Travel agency customers are particularly vulnerable to targeted phishing campaigns because attackers can craft messages referencing specific travel interests, booking confirmations, or seasonal destinations. The weak MD5 hashing used to protect these passwords means many accounts are effectively already compromised, with working credentials available to anyone who purchases the dataset.

How Database Breaches Work

A database breach occurs when attackers exploit security vulnerabilities in website code, server configurations, or outdated software to gain unauthorized access to stored user data. Smaller regional travel agencies in India often operate with limited IT budgets and may rely on older booking systems or content management platforms containing known security vulnerabilities. Using MD5 for password storage rather than modern algorithms like bcrypt significantly amplifies the damage when a breach occurs. Attackers export the database and distribute credential data through underground markets.
